The recorded history of people living in South Africa started with the survivors of the Dutch shipwreck, called Nieuwe Haarlem, who built a small fort in March 1647. Jan van Riebeeck was on one of the ships in the fleet which rescued the men.

Jan van Riebeeck led a fleet of five ships in 1652, consisting of 90 Calvinist settlers to South Africa, in the Cape of Good Hope. The names of the ships were ‘Drommedaris’, ‘Goede Hoop’, ‘Reiger’, ‘Oliphant’ and ‘Walvisch’.
