The established Dutch colony in the Cape expands, especially near the turn of the century. The Trekboere explores the country and lives a semi-nomadic lifestyle by farming and growing cattle.

The Trekboere becomes known as Boere and a separate identity from the Dutch colonists develops, with Afrikaans becoming the language of the Boer.

The Boer encounters the Khoikhoi, San and Bantu-speaking tribes.
